Background

Dr Mary Adepoju has multidisciplinary academic background in Microbiology/Virology and Fisheries Science from Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology and Bachelor of Agricultural Technology in Fisheries Science from Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) respectively.

She had her post graduate studies at the premier University of Ibadan, Nigeria where she also bagged her Doctor of Philosophy in 2018 with specialisation in post-harvest technology. She later bagged another Master of Science in Food Systems and Management from Cranfield University.

She is an astute researcher who has distinguished herself in her area of research, and this won her the prestigious Research Training Fellowship for Scientists in Developing Countries (RTF_DCS) in 2015 that afforded her a 7-month research expedition to India.

She started her research career journey as Research Officer in April 2012 at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi Lagos Nigeria, where she was involved in research and development in agro-allied, product development and quality evaluation. She joined the Applied Mycology Group, Cranfield University as a Research Fellow in Food Systems in October 2023.

Research opportunities

Her current research interests focus on:

• Assessment of food contamination and food loss along the value chain and deciphering sustainable mitigation measures.

• Investigating low-cost device for the detection and decontamination of aflatoxin in peanut value chain

• Developing research model for the identification of aflatoxin priority risk zones in Rwanda for hepatitis intervention

Current activities

She is currently working with the Cranfield team of the African Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Cooling, developing training modules for Food Safety, Quality Management System and Environmental Management. She also contributes to the Agrifood MSc programme through teaching.

She recently won the Cranfield Global Research Fund grant to work along with other researchers on “Aflatoxin and Hepatitis in Rwanda: developing joint research model to identify priority intervention geographical zones”.
