Background

Dr Loreto Sheils has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Bioinorganic Chemistry from University College Dublin. She also spent a year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Basel, Switzerland.

Prior to joining Cranfield University, Loreto spent over 20 years working in Unilever R&D in the UK and in The Netherlands where she was involved in various aspects of managing relationships with academia and other organisations, with a  particular focus on grant-funded industry academia collaborations. She has expertise in negotiating complex research contracts and in assessing and optimising collaborative EU and UK research grant proposals to meet internal research needs and EU project management experience.

Current activities

Loreto joined the Research and Innovation Office in February 2019 in the newly created role of Post Award Manager. The aim of the role is to focus on the non-financial aspects of post award management, reducing the likelihood of risk to the University and improving its reputation and ability to deliver.

The role has three main functions:

- to support an enhanced professional and effective post-award and risk management environment and culture across the University;

    - to problem-solve on selected ‘high risk’ research projects and / or those that require a cross-functional (i.e. HR, finance, contracts etc.) response;

      - to oversee delivery of selected research projects (e.g. strategically important, complex, significant for some reason) as part of a managed portfolio.
