Prepare yourself and your organisation for the AI work revolution

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere – literally and figuratively. Not only is it the hot topic of the moment across media stories, service delivery products and the world of work, but it’s also all around us in the tools we use on a daily basis, including satnav, voice assistants (such as Siri) and email predictive responses.

AI is manifesting into our lives at an exponential rate and infiltrating every industry and sector, with some such as healthcare already successfully utilising AI technology whilst others are only just beginning to grasp what it might mean for the future.

Join us for our AI Masterclass Series as we share Cranfield expertise, harnessing the latest research and thinking on the implications of AI across key aspects of business and industry, and the risks and opportunities it presents to leaders.

The Ethics of AI: Guiding the Future of Organisational Leadership

9 April 2024, 14:00-15:30

Delivered by Professor Andrey Pavlov

The ethics of a nascent innovation are often left to the end, as an afterthought, but in the case of AI, many of the philosophical and ethical issues need to be at the forefront of our development and use of the technology.

This first masterclass of the series will introduce the concept of AI ethics as it applies to various aspects of business and explore how leaders can factor ethical considerations into their decision making around AI implementation. In an era where AI is reshaping industries, understanding its ethical implications is not just a necessity but a strategic advantage. This masterclass and Q&A session will focus on the following topics:

The Core of AI Ethics

  • Fundamental Challenges: What is the Turing Test, the Chinese Room Argument, and the Problem of Consciousness, and why are these questions important for designing and implementing AI solutions?
  • Alignment Issues: What is the Problem of Alignment in AI and how do we ensure that machines can harmoniously coexist with human values and objectives?

A Deep Dive into Today's Most Pressing Issues

  • Immediate Impact on Society: How is AI reshaping privacy norms, influencing employment landscapes, and potentially automating discrimination in decision systems?
  • Misuses of AI: What lies beneath the surface of AI algorithms? What challenges does the opacity of AI systems present and what can we do to counteract behavioural manipulation and other unethical uses of AI?
  • Human-Robot Interaction: In a world where robots care for us, how will our relationships evolve? What are the respective roles and responsibilities of people and machines and how do we ensure that AI-enabled systems enhance rather than harm human well-being?
  • Confronting Existential Risks: What are the potential long-term risks of AI? What is artificial general intelligence and singularity? How can we coexist with superintelligent AI?

Navigating the Global AI Regulatory Landscape

  • How are philosophical and ethical principles influencing AI regulation worldwide?
  • What can we learn from the UK Government's 2023 AI White Paper and beyond?
