The Surface Engineering and Precision Centre (SEPC) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in thin film deposition techniques, precision device manufacturing and in-process metrology in ultra-precision machines. Read more Read less

SEPC is led by acting head of centre Dr Gregory Bizarri and has 13 academic and research staff and 7 support staff. The Institute has access to the breadth of expertise and technologies needed to take research into atomistic and particulate based manufacturing techniques through to prototypes, testing and production. As a result, we have an international network of partners in industry - including Rolls-Royce and Siemens - as well as non-government organisations and government agencies, SMEs and micro-companies. The focus on ‘live’ projects means research and training is geared towards relevant applications and future strategies in the aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, biomedical and mining sectors.

Three specific Centres of Excellence are contained within SEPC. The National High Temperature Surface Engineering Centre (NHTSEC) designs and tests surface treatments for components subjected to extreme and hostile environments. The Centre is 82% funded by industry, and is the sole university provider of EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings to Rolls-Royce gas turbine engines. The Sol-Gel Coating Centre generates opportunities for adopting organic and inorganic hybrid materials for thin films and addresses corrosion and fouling. Cranfield Nano specialises in creating new forms of nanomaterials for sensors, biosensors and actuators.
