The Centre for Space Systems is the main hub of space-related knowledge at Cranfield, with expertise spanning both upstream and downstream areas and the provider of the UK’s longest established Astronautics and Space Engineering degree.
The Centre for Space Systems is Cranfield University's focal point for space research, innovation and education. Drawing on more than four decades of experience in space education and research, the Centre brings together expertise in spacecraft systems, astrodynamics, propulsion, planetary and space robotics, telecommunications engineering, satellite communications, positioning, navigation and timing (PNT), sensor fusion, space situational awareness, astrobiology and space sustainability. It develops technologies and systems that address the challenges of current and future space missions, combining multidisciplinary engineering expertise with a systems approach to deliver solutions across the complete space lifecycle, from mission concept and spacecraft design to operations, sustainability and downstream applications. .
Our research addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing the global space sector, including sustainability, on-orbit servicing, resilient satellite communications, 5G/6G non-terrestrial network, autonomous robotic systems, ISRU, ISAM, electric propulsion, and planetary defence. Working closely with industry, government and international partners, we translate fundamental research into practical technologies with real-world impact. Our work supports missions ranging from CubeSats and satellite constellations to advanced Earth observation concepts, while contributing to international programmes led by organisations including the European Space Agency, UK Space Agency, and leading industrial partners. Through our long-established MSc in Astronautics and Space Engineering, we also educate the next generation of engineers and researchers who go on to shape the global space industry.
The Centre is supported by world-class research infrastructure, including the ASTRA-Lab for ground-based testing of space robotics and guidance, navigation, and control systems; dedicated satellite communications and 6G non-terrestrial network facilities; advanced propulsion laboratories; planetary robotics, and specialist laboratories for spacecraft systems development and testing. We actively collaborate with industry, government and academic partners to tackle complex engineering challenges, accelerate technology development and support the growth of a sustainable, resilient and internationally competitive space sector.
