Solids removal is a critical stage of wastewater treatment as it is not only needed to meet the specific total suspended solids (TSS) consent for discharge but it also helps meeting standards for other parameters by removing the particulate fraction, for example, for organics and phosphorus. In order to meet stricter consents for discharge coming into place tertiary filtration systems are being more commonly used.

The aim of this 1 year project is then to evaluate and optimise a demonstration scale pile cloth media filter for tertiary solids removal in real operating conditions. Specifically, the objectives for this work are to trial a range cloth media in the unit installed on the Cranfield University sewage treatment works and to evaluate the impact of operational parameters (flow, backwash …) on the performance of the filter.

The student will be based on the Cranfield University campus and will use the state of the art testing facilities and laboratories for water and wastewater treatment and analysis offered by Cranfield University.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline, such as environmental engineering/science or chemical engineering. The ideal candidate should have some understanding in some, or all, areas of wastewater treatment, filtration and recovery and water quality analyses. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills for regular interaction with the sponsors, and with an interest in industrial research.

Sponsored by Alfa Laval Ashbrook Simon-Hartley Ltd, this studentship will provide a bursary of £ 18,000 p.a. (tax free) plus fees* for 1 year
