Background
Simon Templar is a qualified management accountant and a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Cranfield School of Management. Simon completed his PhD at Cranfield in 2013, has an MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Cranfield 2001 and has a BSc combined studies (transport and economics) from Plymouth Polytechnic (UK). He has more than 20 years' industrial experience in a wide range of management roles, including finance, sales and marketing, physical distribution management, and human resource management.Current activities
Simon lectures on management accounting and supply chain costing across a variety of MSc courses. He also lectures on in-company and external programmes delivered by Cranfield University. He has designed a range of distance/blended learning products for the university's internal and external customers. In addition, he has lectured on supply chain management and accounting at a number of Universities, including Breda University (Netherlands), Jacobs University (Bremen, Germany), Heriot-Watt University (UK), Muscat University (Oman), Royal Holloway University of London (UK), Warwick University (UK), Univeridad de Deusto (Bilbao), UPC (Barcelona and Bilbao), SKEMA (France), and CIIM (Cyprus). As a member of a multidisciplinary research team jointly funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), he made a significant contribution to the development of a novel process to assess supply chain costs in the food and drink industry. The Cranfield Students Association awarded Simon best lecturer at Cranfield School of Management 2013-2014 and 2015-2016.
Currently, his research interests are related to supply chain finance, supply chain costing, including exploring the effect of transfer pricing on supply chain management decisions. Other research interests include customer profitability analysis, cost-to-serve, tax-efficient supply chains and rail freight.
Simon has authored and collaborated on journal, conference, practitioner papers and book chapters associated with his research interests. His article "Ensuring the Transfer Price is Right" was included in the International Federation of Accountants Articles of Merit Award Program for Distinguished Contribution to Management Accounting in 2005. Simon's co-authored paper "Inter-Organisational Costing Approaches - the Inhibiting Factors" published in the International Journal of Logistics Management (2010) received the highly commended award winner for 2011. Simon is a founding member of the Supply Chain Finance Community, a non-for-profit association, which aims to share SCF good practice and new research in an open, collaborative environment.
Simon co-authored Financing the End-to-End Supply Chain: A Reference Guide to Supply Chain Finance in 2016 and translated into Chinese in 2021. In 2019 Kogan Page published Supply Chain Management Accounting: Managing Profitability, Working Capital and Asset Utilization written by Simon. The 2nd edition of Financing the End-to-End Supply Chain: A Reference Guide to Supply Chain Finance was published in August 2020. Simon authored this year, Using Financial Information to Enhance your Business Relationship with your Key Accounts published by the Cranfield Key Account Management Forum. Simon has written a chapter "The Impact of Procurement on Financial Results", which will be included in the 3rd edition of Leading Procurement Strategy (authored by Carlos Mena), Remko van Hoek and Martin Christopher) published by Kogan Page this year.
