Flemtec, a UK sustainable technology company, is the latest industry partner to join the Cranfield Future Energy programme.
Flemtec aims to decentralise ammonia production, which can then improve resilience across agricultural and industrial supply chains by reducing reliance on long-distance transport and centralised production. Enabling lower-carbon ammonia to be produced closer to where it is needed supports both decarbonisation and greater long-term resilience.
Dr Karl Bamford, CEO and Co-founder, Flemtec, said: "Following a worldwide search for the right partner, we selected Cranfield University because of its expertise, facilities and strong commitment to industry collaboration. With technology originally developed in New Zealand and the USA, we chose the UK and Cranfield for the next stage of development because of the unique opportunities available to advance and independently validate the technology.

It has already developed a novel way to produce ammonia and has experience in green hydrogen production. We’re looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together through this collaboration."
Originally named the Cranfield Hydrogen Integration Incubator (CH2i), the project is now called Cranfield Future Energy (CFE) to better reflect the wider research and development work being done on all kinds of renewable, low-emission energy sources. CFE already has an extensive list of industry partners, including the likes of Airbus, Toyota, Heathrow Airport, Siemens Energy, GKN and HyWaves.
The first CFE facility – the Cranfield Power and Propulsion Laboratories (CPPL) was officially opened in November 2025 by Sir Andrew Haines, Chair of Cranfield University Council, and a second building - the Cranfield Future Energy Labs - will be opening later this year.
