The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation awards up to 15 scholarships to Canadian doctoral candidates pursuing research related to one of its four founding themes, including environmental issues.

Who can apply

  • Applicants must be full-time first or second year students enrolled (or in the process of enrolling) on a doctoral programme in the humanities, natural environment or social sciences; and
  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled full-time on a doctoral programme in Canada, or Canadian citizens enrolled full-time in a doctoral programme outside of Canada.

Trudeau scholars are selected through a rigorous selection process that involves the following steps:

  1. Evaluation of application files by a selection committee;
  2. Invitation to approximatively 30 finalists to an interview at the Foundation offices in Montréal;
  3. Recommendation of 15 candidates to the Application and Nomination Review Committee, and then to the Board for approval.

  • Academic excellence,
  • Communication skills,
  • Public engagement,
  • Desire to contribute to public dialogue and transmit knowledge,
  • Desire to be involved in the community with other researchers or scholars,
  • Thematic relevance of the doctoral research.

Candidates must be nominated by the Canadian or foreign institution where they wish to study or are currently studying.
