This module can only be taken as part of the Vehicle and Weapon Engineering MSc (USA).

This course aims to give a general understanding of the overall requirements, characteristics and design of fighting vehicles and the vehicle platform systems. The topics are covered by taught lectures, discussions and tours of the vehicles and equipment at the Defence Academy. Both powertrain and chassis systems are considered.

What you will learn

To gain an insight into the key debates within the topic of military vehicle design, performance, chassis design, powertrain design and vehicle dynamics. This should assist in setting out requirements or specifications for the vehicle system.

Core content

This module will cover the fundamentals of the performance of the military vehicle. The topics covered include both the chassis system and the vehicle powertrain and include:

  • engines and transmissions,
  • vehicle performance,
  • off-road capability,
  • ride and handling,
  • the vehicle chassis,
  • vehicle design.

The students will receive a series of lectures, supported by examples and tutorials. There will also be an opportunity to discuss and investigate the vehicle examples and hardware held within the equipment halls at the college.
