‘The Entrepreneurial and Managerial Antecedent of BMI’
PhD Proposal
Abstract
Competitive advantage is a central theme in strategic management, especially how firms create, identify and exploit sources of competitive advantage that result in higher levels of rents appropriation. A great deal of research maintains that innovation is a primary source of firms’ sustained performance. In recent literature and research, however, it has been proposed that continuing improving a firm’s business model is a new form of innovation, complimenting product, process and organisational innovation. The business model concept highlights the relevance of processes of value creation for the consumer, extending previous overemphasis in strategy research on value capturing (Priem, Wenzel and Koch, 2018): business model innovation (BMI) is thus increasingly seen as a key source of competitive advantage for organisations. (Massa, Tucci and Afuah, 2017; Teece, 2010; Kim and Min, 2015).
Despite the widespread acceptance of the above views, research remains limited on what drives business model innovation (Foss and Saebi, 2015). More specifically, there is a lack of research examining the managerial/entrepreneurial processes underlying business model innovation. This project aims to address this gap and uncover the ‘the managerial determinants’ of BMI.
