The research is part of a major European Project called Futprint50 and focuses on the electrification of a 50 passenger aircraft. You will have the opportunity to work closely with world-leading researchers and industrial engineers on the design, modelling, integration and analysis of hybrid electric systems and architectures. An exciting opportunity to join a growing team within the Hybrid electric Propulsion Group at Cranfield and influence the future of the aerospace industry. 

Develop and integrate technologies and systems for Hybrid Electric Propulsion. Contribute to a sustainable and Zero Net Emissions Aerospace industry. Unique opportunity to be part of one of the major aircraft electrification research programmes worldwide with a total research budget in excess of 7.5 million Euros. 

The project will focus on the development and integration of novel technologies for the introduction of a 50 passenger hybrid-electric aircraft. You will be part of a world-class team working on the electrification of aviation.

You will join a growing team within the Hybrid electric Propulsion Group at Cranfield and you will have the opportunity to work closely with international world-leading partners including aircraft manufacturer, system designers and researchers.

The programme is one of the major electrification research projects worldwide and you will have the opportunity to contribute to the future of the aerospace industry. The technologies that will be developed along with the resulting systems and architectures will have a major impact to meet future Zero Emissions aircraft operations.

You will work closely with specialists and technology managers as part of this international consortium. Have the opportunity to attend meetings in partners location, attend training events, collaborate closely with other industrial institutions and major aerospace companies/organisations. You will also attend and present your research at international conferences.

Contribute to the future of green aviation by developing new technologies and system architectures. Work at the forefront of research in aircraft electrification. Develop multidisciplinary research and technology skills within a world-class team. You will develop management, presentation, planning, communication and technical skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a good first degree in mechanical, aerospace, electrical engineering or computing, maths or physicist or any other relevant topic. An MSc or relevant work experience will be beneficial. Knowledge of system integration and system modelling including Matlab, Simulink, Python, AMESIm would be beneficial also.


Applicant must be UK or EU nationals £16,000 p.a. for 3.5 years, plus full tuition fees.
