This is a fantastic opportunity to work within the SOILS-R-GGREAT project which aims to investigate the use soil to combat climate change.

During the PhD, you will also investigate possible approaches for robust, fast and systematic data collection for large Life Cycle Inventory datasets. You will also learn and apply extensively the tools models and techniques necessary to carry out consequential LCA in the agricultural and forestry sectors. The studentship will also offer the opportunity to explore the technical challenges of carrying out a consequential LCA at global scale.

You will be based at Cranfield University with frequent interactions with the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen, and SRUC. You will contribute to some data collection of agricultural and forestry systems.

You will also liaise with other partners overseas to derive better data quality for different regions of the world.
Your research constitutes a striking contribution in the field of LCA of land based greenhouse gas removal GGR and it will allow you to develop an expertise in assessing technologies to fight climate change and increase sustainability of the world economy. 

You will be based with the (Greenhouse Gas Removal from the Atmosphere) GGRA team at the Cranfield Centre for Environmental and Agricultural Informatics (CEAI), which is part of the School of Water, Energy, and Environment and Agri-Food (SWEE). You will be part of the  GGRA team together with other staff.

Entry requirements

You should have a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline, such as agricultural science, soil sciences, applied mathematics or economics. If you are expecting to have a degree, you are still eligible under the conditions that the degree is obtained by January 2018. Some experience and knowledge on LCA is required. You should be confident with modelling and database management. Ideally you should have some experience in publishing either by submitting a scientific publication, a poster or full paper.


Sponsored by NERC, this studentship will provide a bursary of up to £14.553. (tax free) plus fees* for 3 years.
