Strengthening the research capacity at MCAST will focus on four themes crucial to improving water use and management in irrigated agriculture:

  1. Decreasing agricultural water demand;
  2. Making better use of alternative water sources ;
  3. Promoting renewable desalinization, on-farm desalinization and utilization of saline water, and;
  4. Reducing the environmental impacts associated with discharges of nutrient-rich farm waters.

The project will deliver a range of activities to build capacity with Maltese researchers, foster institutional research networking, and support research policy development.

The project will build knowledge through design and delivery of advanced training courses, organising staff exchanges, technical workshops, on-farm demonstration events to promote innovations and best practice, Summer Schools and online training..

The project will strengthen MCAST’s research and science and technology capacity in water use in agriculture, build new partnerships between research institutions in this sector, and ultimately help address water scarcity and environment/agriculture issues facing one of the world’s driest countries.
