Cranfield University scientists will join an all-female speaker line-up at Soapbox Science in Middleton Hall, centre:mk shopping centre this weekend.

The innovative event, taking place on Saturday 29 July between 12 – 3pm, promotes female scientists by engaging with the public through interactive talks and lively demonstrations.

Hoping to change the face of science and empower women in the industry, speakers will share their knowledge and passion about the cutting-edge scientific research they are involved in. The quirky, no-frills format will enable speakers to cover topics including autism, food waste and soil science.

Coordinating the event in Milton Keynes for the second year running is Dr Jacqueline Hannam, a soil scientist from Cranfield University. She said: “We are thrilled that Soapbox Science is returning to Milton Keynes and that we can once again promote the work of the talented female scientists from the region. Having five speakers from Cranfield is an excellent example of the diverse workforce at the University, and the passion for promoting the work that we do.”

It is anticipated that the Deputy Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Martin Petchey will show his support at the event.

The event is free to attend and will take place on the indoor beach that will be in Middleton Hall for the summer, so sit back and relax in your deck chair and prepare to be wowed by amazing science!

Soapbox Science provides a unique platform that encourages female scientists to exhibit their research and generate debate in public arenas, with many events being held across the UK and Ireland. Each speaker is given one hour to amaze audiences, answer questions and spark discussions about their chosen area of work.

This weekend’s event will showcase 12 speakers in total, sharing research in technology, science and engineering. Institutions represented include Bournemouth University, Cranfield University, University of Buckingham, Cambridge University, University of Edinburgh, The Open University and University of Warwick.
