Professor Simon Pollard, Cranfield University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the School of Water, Energy and Environment, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Professor Pollard, an environmental engineer who has made a significant impact on engineering practice from the field of risk management, joins 50 of the UK’s top engineers elected today as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering in a list that includes some of the world’s leading innovators and business people. The newly elected Fellows will add their expertise to a Fellowship of 1,500 world-leading engineers from industry and academia.
Professor Sir Peter Gregson, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Cranfield University, said: “Professor Pollard’s election to the Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering is greatly deserved. At Cranfield, he has led the way in developing our thinking on environmental engineering and has demonstrated the immense value of bringing business, science and technology together.
“As the University’s executive lead for diversity, Professor Pollard has also been instrumental to Cranfield’s receipt of an Athena SWAN Bronze Award this year, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to gender equality across the University.”
Commenting on the announcement of the 50 new fellows; Professor Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FREng FRS, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, said: “Since 130 engineers were first called together in 1976 to form the Fellowship of Engineering, our Fellows have come together to advance and promote excellence in engineering. A member of the University Executive, Professor Pollard is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the School of Water, Energy and Environment. He is a Director of Cranfield Innovative Manufacturing Ltd, executive lead for Cranfield’s international partnerships and student recruitment, and for the University’s Athena SWAN diversity initiative.
Professor Pollard has built a distinguished career through appointments in engineering consultancy, Government agencies and academia. He is Editor of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ series on sustainable engineering, and his research on risk management as applied to environmental systems has been funded by the US Water Research Foundation, EPSRC, NERC and Defra.
