Cranfield University is delighted to report that 81% of its research has been rated as world leading or internationally excellent in its quality by the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF).
REF is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (HEIs) and informs the allocation of research funding from HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England).
Chief Executive and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Peter Gregson, said: “We are very pleased with the outcome of the REF 2014 exercise. We have seen a significant improvement in our grade point average against our 2008 RAE result, at a time when the sector has improved its overall performance.”
The University’s research was submitted for REF 2014 in three units of assessment (UoA). Since RAE 2008 it has improved its position in all three of these units, when measured in terms of research power and factoring the size and quality of the University’s submission.
In the Aeronautical, Mechanical, Chemical and Manufacturing Engineering UoA Cranfield’s overall profile was significantly higher than RAE 2008. The number of world leading or internationally excellent outputs has more than doubled and second only to Imperial College London, in terms of research power.
In the Business and Management UoA Cranfield maintained its position in the top quartile of universities, with 60% of its impact considered as world leading compared to the 38% UoA average.
Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Science UoA covers an extremely broad group of disciplines. Cranfield significantly enhanced its performance, now being within the second quartile in terms of research power and with 23% of its Agrifood research considered world leading in its quality. All impact was considered to be world leading or internationally excellent.
