Background

Zhengfei is a PhD researcher focused on hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion, gas turbine electrification and cycle innovation.

Zhengfei has more than 7 years of experience in aviation and gas turbines, he acquired his bachelor's degree from the Civil Aviation University of China in 2020 and holds an MSc degree in Thermal Power (Aerospace Propulsion option) from Cranfield University. After finishing his MSc, he joined the Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Group to pursue his PhD degree.

Zhengfei is working with his supervisor Professor Panagiotis Laskaridis and Dr Evangelia Pontika for his PhD in high bypass ratio turbofan engines for civil aircraft propulsion systems. His research aims to improve the aircraft propulsion system's efficiency and performance as well as reduce emissions and fuel usage.

Research opportunities

Zhengfei's research interest lies in the novel electrified aircraft propulsion system. His research focus includes novel electrified concepts and cycle innovation including gas turbine electric power assistance, gas turbine peak power shaving (core-resizing), and fuel cell steam injection.

His research aims at achieving the 2050 net-zero emission target as well as exploring the design space of future aircraft propulsion systems.

Zhengfei's expertise includes gas turbine performance and simulation, propulsion system performance and integration, engine efficiency, cycle optimization, lifting enhancement, fuel cell and steam injection.
