Contact Xun Huang

Background

Xun Huang (MSc, BEng) graduated from Cranfield University(MSc) with a major in Aircraft Design. Specializing in the control strategy and flight control system hardware of bionic flapping-wing rotorcraft.

Before joining Cranfield University, Xun presided over a number of provincial and national (China) university student innovation and entrepreneurship projects and won a number of awards.At the same time, he successfully completed a number of aviation projects including sounding rockets and tailstock tandem UAVs.

He has made research achievements in aircraft control system and aircraft target recognition, obtained eight corresponding patents and four papers (China).

Current activities

His project is aimed to develop a practical and reliable control methodology for micro FWR(flapping wing rotor) flight with simple and minimum actuation system. The aim will be achieved through the following objectives in the PhD study.

1) Literature review of the state-of-the-art bionic flapping wing performance with a focus on the FWR flight and relevant subjects;

2) Study of flight stability of FWR by numerical modelling, simulation and experimental methods;

3) Study of flight control methods that suitable for the FWR by analytical and experimental methods;

4) Improve design of the existing FWR model with onboard actuation and control devices subject to a condition of MTOW below 60gm;

5) Bench test: develop a test rig and measurement frame and carry out experiment to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of control system and use the data to validate the numerical model;

6) Flight test: carry out outdoor flight test to optimize the control parameters and achieve a stable VTOL, hovering and a tilt-body forward flight;.
