Background

Research Engineer/ Fellow with over 10 years of experience spanning industry and academia, working at the intersection of digital engineering, robotics, and aerospace systems.

Currently based at Cranfield University within the Centre for Aeronautics, Propulsion and Power, contributing to research and development of data-driven tools and digital frameworks for aerospace applications.

Prior to joining Cranfield, worked at Infosys, delivering large-scale software, automation, and data engineering solutions across global clients in finance and technology sectors.

Utkarsh brings interdisciplinary expertise across software development, machine learning, robotics, and mechanical engineering, with a focus on translating research concepts into robust, scalable, and practical engineering solutions. His work spans software development, machine learning, robotics, machine vision, and automation, with particular interest in digital engineering applications for aerospace systems, including advanced/ low emission propulsion, UAVs, digital twins, and emerging autonomous technologies.

Research opportunities

Digital engineering for aerospace systems, including data-driven modelling, simulation, and digital twin frameworks for aircraft design.

Research software engineering and development of scalable, reproducible tools for scientific and engineering applications.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence for engineering systems, with applications in robotics, perception, and decision-making.

Robotics and autonomous systems, including human–robot interaction, swarm robotics, and UAV-based applications.

Extended reality (XR) technologies for engineering design, visualisation, and human–machine interaction.

Integration of data engineering and computational methods to support large-scale analysis in aviation and environmental impact studies.

Current activities

Utkarsh contributes to the Horizon Europe programme Impact Monitor, focused on developing a coherent and holistic digital framework for assessing the environmental, economic, and societal impact of aviation research and innovation.

He designs and develops data-driven tools, dashboards and software systems to support large-scale analysis of aviation scenarios, including greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, and noise impact.

He works within an international research consortium including DLR (German Aerospace Center), ONERA, NLR, and leading academic and industry partners, contributing to the development of interoperable and reproducible research software and analytical methodologies.

He is also engaged in exploratory work on digital engineering approaches, including digital twins and extended reality, for aircraft design and analysis.
