Sergio Piastra received his B.Eng. (2008) and M.Eng. (2011) in Transportation Systems Engineering from University of Rome “La Sapienza” (full marks with honors).
After being licensed as a Professional Civil Engineer (2012), he also received his B.Eng. (2016) in Computer Science and Control Engineering from University of Rome “La Sapienza” (full marks). The choice of this last further study path has been derived from his strong belief that the future of the civil-transportation engineering will be fully permeated by ICT and automation in the near future.
He also received his Ph.D. in Mechanics and Advanced Engineering Sciences - Aerospace Engineering Sector (2021) from University of Bologna on Mixed Reality Applications in Industry and Services.
Sergio’s research interests, as well as his 4-month experience in the Roma-Fiumicino International Airport Control Tower, positively impacted on RETINA project, a multi-awarded European exploratory research project (led by University of Bologna) investigating the applicability of Augmented Reality for Airport Control Towers.
Sergio Piastra currently works in a partnership with Curtiss-Wright Corporation and Innovate UK.
His research interests include: Machine Learning, Image Processing, User and Object Tracking, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, See-Through Head-Mounted Displays, Human-Machine Interface, Live Video Streaming, Signal Processing, Advanced Radar Techniques, Real-Time Georeferenced Applications, Air Traffic Control Systems.
