Areas of expertise


Professor Roy has led competitive design research at Cranfield for over twenty years and is an advocate for creative thinking in higher education. He has started a number of new initiatives over the last ten years, including setting up the Centre for Competitive Creative Design (C4D), a £5.5 million investment from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Cranfield University, University of the Arts London and EEDA . The Centre aims to embed design thinking across enterprises to improve their creativity and make them more competitive. This is an initiative to link design with science, technology and management. 

Professor Roy is experienced in building high performance teams and leading collaborative research and development with industry. In recognition of his leadership, organisational ability and international reputation, he was elected President of the Association of Cost Engineers (ACostE) (2008-2010) and a Fellow of The International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP) . 

Professor Roy previously worked at TELCO (now TATA Motors) and was selected as the Best Graduate Engineer Trainee in 1990. He graduated with a Production Engineering BEng and MEng from Jadavpur University, India and an MSc (Intelligent Systems) and PhD (Design Optimisation and Soft Computing) from the University of Plymouth, UK.

Professor Roy was also the Founding Editor in Chief of the Applied Soft Computing journal from Elsevier (2001-2016).

Current activities

Professor Roy is Director of Manufacturing, Director of the Through-life Engineering Services Centre and Director of the Operations Excellence Institute at Cranfield.

  • Non-destructive evaluation  technologies for maintenance
  • Developing whole life cost models for products and services
  • Identifying and modelling uncertainties involved in cost estimates at the bidding stage
  • Real life design and service optimisation
  • Real life application of soft computing techniques for modelling and optimisation
Professor Roy is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of CIRP, IED , Association of Cost Engineers (ACostE) and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and Institution of Engineers (India). He currently serves on the IET Manufacturing Policy Panel and has also started annual National Manufacturing Debate, National Apprenticeship Competition and Manufacturing 2075 events at Cranfield.
