Background
Ioannis joined Cranfield University in 2017, where he expanded his research portfolio in thermal management systems and systems integration. He is currently Head of the Gas Turbine Engineering Group, leading a team of 21 exceptional academics and researchers dedicated to tackling current and future challenges in aviation. The diversity of the team in terms of skills and backgrounds enables it to innovate advancing technologies and ideas from concept to breadboard-level validation.
As Professor of Gas Turbine and Thermo-Fluid Systems Performance Ioannis works closely with Rolls-Royce on propulsion and thermal management systems design, integration, and assessment and on data analysis. He also collaborates with Siemens Industries Software to develop capabilities for commercial aerospace-relevant tools, and engages extensively with universities, research organizations and industry partners across UK and Europe through several research projects
Prior to joining Cranfield University Ioannis was an Assistant Professor (Tenure) for marine gas turbines and simulation methods at the Hellenic Naval Academy and Senior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Thermal Turbomachines (LTT) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) working extensively on gas turbine diagnostics, compressor water injection, aero-engines performance optimization and advanced modelling including multi-physics modelling of rain ingestion.
Ioannis’ research interests include modelling and multi‑disciplinary optimisation of propulsion systems, advanced modelling methods (multi‑fidelity and multi‑physics), gas turbine transient simulation and operability assessment, and measurement analysis. He has contributed in various capacities to several major EU FP6 and FP7 programmes in aero‑engine design, including VIVACE, NEWAC and CRESCENDO. He has also played key roles in two ATI‑funded UK thermal‑management projects, PIPS and PINES, and led Cranfield University’s work on hydrogen gas turbine and advanced propulsion cycle assessment for the FlyZero programme. In addition, he was part of the team that developed the PROOSIS simulation environment and the gas turbine modelling capabilities now embedded within Siemens Simcenter Amesim.
Ioannis currently leads Cranfield University’s activities in the Clean Aviation project HEAVEN, the iUK/ATI projects LH2GT, RUFUS and NENE, and the European Commission project STEROPE, while also supporting research delivery within the iUK/ATI project TUNE.
Ioannis has published 92 papers, received three ASME Best Paper Awards, and supervised 10 PhD students to completion. He leads a core module on the Thermal Power MSc, has supervised more than 90 MSc students, and supports six CPD programmes. He also serves as the Aerospace and Aviation Doctoral Lead, supporting the Cranfield University research‑student community.
Current activities
Ioannis research interests include modelling and assessment of gas turbine configurations (existing and novel), consistent physical modelling of gas turbines utilising multi-disciplinary and multi-fidelity methods, steady state and dynamic simulation of engine and engine systems and gas turbine operation and performance monitoring.
Currently he conducts research in the field of integrated thermal management systems in the frame of projects PINES (Powerplant Integration of Novel Engine Systems) and LH2GT lead by Rolls-Royce, he supports the Cranfield University Rolls-Royce UTC Aero Systems Design, Integration & Performance activities in gas turbine simulation, novel cycles and thermal management and he collaborates with Siemens Digital Industries Software in gas turbines modeling and in simulating integrated propulsion systems.
