Background

Laura Hugh is a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science within Cranfield Forensic Institute (CFI) at Cranfield University. She lectures on core aspects of Forensic Science and the evaluation of forensic evidence types, including the interpretation of body fluids, bloodstain patterns and DNA. She is a part-time PhD researcher in forensic biology, specifically within the discipline of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) at CFI and holds an MSc in Forensic Science. Laura holds professional membership with the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Laura is a Forensic Biologist with 12 years practitioner experience. She originally trained as a Forensic Examiner in the Forensic Science Service (FSS). She then moved to LGC Forensics where she was a court attending expert witness trained in the interpretation of body fluids (including BPA) and DNA. She was also trained in the recovery and preparation of ecological sample types from crime scenes. Laura has additionally advised on forensic biology disciplines within casework from a defence perspective and for a charity focused on cases brought before the Court of Appeal. Laura has previously worked as Course Leader of the Forensic Science undergraduate programmes at University of West London. She currently sits as an advisor on the body fluids subgroup of the Forensic Capability Network (FCN) and has also delivered training in forensic science awareness for UK police forces.
