Background

José M Castiblanco Quintero is an aeronautical engineer with a PhD in Automation, Robotics, and Industrial Informatics. He is a leading expert in autonomous systems and control, particularly for aerial platforms, drone concepts, and advanced air mobility enablers. At Cranfield University's Centre for Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems, Jose manages the Flying Arena Lab, where he drives cutting-edge research and innovation in aerial vehicle dynamics. He is committed to creating a positive social impact through his work, fostering collaborative relationships and shared responsibilities to achieve collective success. Here, you will find more info about my activities and interests.

Research opportunities

José's research plan integrates IT and AI technologies with advanced data analytics to model interconnected systems using complexity measures. This approach allows him to assess and optimise algorithmic capacity while evaluating the disparity in data sources. Before we proceed, Jose warmly invites you to watch the YouTube introductory video on exciting research opportunities to collaborate with him.

1. Local Wi-Fi/LAN Networks: Implementation and optimisation of local networks to support advanced UAV applications.

Experimental applications (Flight Arena laboratory with Vicon software and integration of various data sources):

-

- MAVLink and ROS: Development of applications for UAV integration and control.

- Object Detection: Algorithms for identifying static and moving objects.

- Obstacle Avoidance: Systems to enhance autonomy in complex environments.

- Autonomous Operations: Strategies for various levels of UAV autonomy.

- Swarm Missions: Coordination of UAVs in collective autonomous missions.

Online/Offline Simulation:

-

- Modelling and Validation: Platforms for testing UAV control algorithms.

- Data Analysis: Desing and utilisation of advanced statistical and probabilistic algorithms.

- Error Calculation: Assessment of algorithm accuracy and reliability.

Current activities

As the Flight Arena Lab manager, José oversees state-of-the-art research in aerial vehicle dynamics, focusing on enhancing agile drone performance and exploring new drone concepts. He is actively involved in developing robust simulation platforms and creating specialised databases that advance academic and industrial applications. Driven by a commitment to environmental sustainability and societal needs, José advocates for a holistic approach to technology development. He is mainly focused on ensuring that his work and that of his students have a positive social impact, promoting empathy, shared responsibilities, and a strong sense of community and family in the pursuit of success.
