Background

Dr. Shruti Sinai Borker is a microbiologist specializing in sanitation technologies, waste management, and microbial ecology. With a Ph.D. from CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, her research focuses on optimizing biological processes for improved sanitation. Her expertise spans microbial ecology, waste management, and composting processes, with a particular emphasis on developing microbial solutions for efficient faeces degradation. She has contributed to biochar-amended bacterial formulation for Himalayan dry-toilets and has been involved in interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance sustainable sanitation technologies particularly in cold and resource-limited regions. Since joining Cranfield, she has been involved in Re-invent the toilet challenge project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Research opportunities

Her research interest is centered on developing user-friendly, cost-effective solutions for managing human faeces.

Current activities

She is currently working as a Research Fellow in Chemical Design Engineering, Centre for Design Engineering (C4DE), where she is associated with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, concentrating on solid processing.
