Background
Professor Kye-Hoon Kim earned his BS/MS in Agricultural Chemistry at Seoul National University in Korea, and a Ph.D. in Agronomy majoring in soil conservation at the University of Georgia at Athens, Georgia in USA. Two year's work at the ORNL, Tennessee as a postdoc followed by six year's work for the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety as a senior researcher significantly influenced his interests in environmental issues. He has worked for the University of Seoul as a Professor of Soil Science since 1997 and has worked extensively in a wide range of soil issues including remediation of contaminated soils in the urban areas; recycling of by-product gypsum; phytoremediation of the contaminated soils; development of growing substrates for specific crops; standardization of methods of soil analysis; and environmentally-safe burial of animal carcasses to prevent epidemics. He was a visiting scholar at the Integrated Waste Management Centre, Cranfield University, UK in 2005.
Current activities
Some of his past and present academic and research interests are in: urban soil science; remediation of contaminated soils; recycling of by-product gypsum, especially in agriculture; development of growing substrates for specific crops; standardization of methods of soil analysis; environmentally-safe burial of animal carcasses to prevent epidemics; search for background level of natural radionuclides in Korean soils; and soils of DPRK (north Korea).
