Background

Dr Irfan Madani is a Senior Lecturer in Avionics Systems at Cranfield University, UK, and his teaching responsibilities include lecturing aspects of avionic systems design, avonics data network, GNSS and avionics CNS/ATM at postgraduate level.

Irfan received his MSc in Flight Dynamics from Cranfield University - College of Aeronautics, UK and a PhD in Flight Navigation and Guidance Systems from the University of Sheffield, UK.

Irfan was working in the aircraft industry for more than five years as a flight test engineer for flight control, hydraulic and landing gear systems before he became an academic, immediately involved in teaching aircraft systems, satellite-based navigation and inertial systems for some years and research in radar system, aircraft guidance, navigation and control, and flight trajectory optimisation.

In his previous positions at Cranfield, Irfan was a Technical Specialist for Cranfield University task-team, working on the EU Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative (Systems for Green Operation, Integrated Technology Demonstrator: 2008-2015 work-share £1.2m) and as the Technical Manager of Cranfield's Tasks for Management of Trajectory and Mission WPs in the programme. The research was centred on the development of the GATAC (Green Aircraft Trajectories with ATM Constraints) simulation environment. From 2016 to 2018. He was also involved as a Senior Technical Researcher in EU's SESAR Exploratory Research Projects: AGENT and PARTAKE. He was also the Course Director of Aircraft Engineering MSc programme at Cranfield from 2014 to 2018.

He then worked for Sheffield Hallam University from 2019 to 2025 as a Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering, before he joined back Cranfield University as a Senior Lecturer in Avionics Systems for the Aerospace Vehicle Design (AVD) course. During his time at Cranfield and at SHU, Irfan had supervised many MSc and undergraduate student projects in avionic systems, flight mechanics and aircraft design as well as several PhD students in the area of airframe systems and avionics.

Irfan is a member of Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and a Senior Member of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and Fellow of Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
