Background

Dr Inġ. Darren Mifsud (PhD, MSc, B.Eng (Hons) and AMIMechE) is an engineer by profession, MCAST Senior Lecturer; MCAST Fluid Mechanics Engineering Research (MCAST-EFMRG) Group Lead; Cranfield University Visiting Researcher and Lecturer, Technologist and Inventor of a Novel Artificial Lift Technology and Independent Engineering Consultant.

An engineer with a doctorate in Fluid Mechanics and Multiphase Flow Systems from Cranfield University, Dr Mifsud obtained a BEng (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering (Plant) from MCAST University College, M.Sc. degree in Process Systems Engineering from Cranfield University, and a doctoral degree in Fluid Mechanics and Multiphase Flow Systems from Cranfield University.

During his early career, Dr Mifsud was awarded a highly commended certificate by the International awarding body Edexcel London; recognising the first Maltese MCAST student who obtained distinctive results in his course leading to the MCAST-Btec Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering; was later recognised by the Minister of Economy and Small Business for his contributing ideas leading to the best business plan and strongest entrepreneurial skills; was awarded as the Best B.Eng. (Hons) Overall Student in the Mechanical Engineering (Plant) Course – MCAST IET 2010-2014; and was also awarded as the Best Overall Student in Process Systems Engineering MSc Course in 2016.

Dr Mifsud current work comprises a multitude of research topics, mainly specialising in research areas related to artificial lift technologies, fluid mechanics, flow assurance and heat analysis. He is currently pursuing the development of a patented Multi-phase Jet Pump / Ejector Technology, particularly for flare gas recovery use, aiming toward the commercialisation of a novel technological device promoting net zero routine flaring - an initiative to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
