Background
Dr Casas is a data professional with a mixed background in process development, data analytics and data science. In the first part of her career, she worked at the interface between academia and industry to develop, scale-up and help commercialise processes with the aim to extract value from waste materials such as biomass and food waste. After that, her work has been focused on data analytics and data science in industry, where she has developed expertise in using programming languages such as SQL, Python and DAX to process data from multiple data sources and extract useful insights.
Dr Casas holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Complutense University of Madrid, and her other degrees include a Masters degree in Business Administration, a Masters Degree in Industrial Process Engineering and she also completed a Data Fellowship in Data Analysis with Python. Dr Casas is also passionate about health and safety and she holds a NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
Dr Casas joined Cranfield in April 2023 as a Senior Research Fellow in Data Science for Changing Cities. She has expertise in data analytics and data science, machine learning, data visualisation and storytelling, biorefinery, circular economy, and process development and scale up.
Current activities
Dr Casas is a Senior Research Fellow in Data Science for Changing Cities, based at the Centre for Water, Environment and Development. She is currently working on an ESRC GRCF-funded project called “Scaling-up Off-grid Sanitation”, which aims to unlock trajectories towards the development of sustainable off-grid sanitation systems that adequately deliver safe services along the full service chain. In this project Dr Casas is responsible for the analysis of smartphone survey data to answer research questions such as whether the designs of Container Based Sanitation (CBS) services are inclusive, and how off-grid services such as CBS impact the mental wellbeing of users.
