Cranfield is the only university in Europe with its own airport, aircraft and runway, and is home to the National Flying Laboratory Centre (NFLC), which operates Cranfield's aircraft, as well as the UK’s first digital air traffic control centre, and a host of experimental research facilities.

In 2019, Cranfield University was awarded its sixth Queen’s Anniversary Prize for the work of our NFLC, which brings together academics and technical specialists to deliver experiential learning for aerospace engineering students from over 20 UK universities. The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes are the UK’s most prestigious form of national recognition open to a UK academic or vocational institution.
