Transport accident investigations - A talk by Professor Graham Braithwaite

Join us at Cranfield University for a talk by Professor Braithwaite including a visit to The Accident investigation Laboratory covering accident investigations across different modes of transport and what different sectors have learnt and continue to learn from each other.

The talk will be Martell House followed by a visit to the Cranfield Accident Investigation Laboratory offering an opportunity to see some items from previous accident investigations and training aids used in the courses run by the Safety and Accident investigation centre on their award-winning courses.

Professor Graham Braithwaite is Director of Transport Systems – one of the eight themes that make up Cranfield University, UK. He was first appointed in 2003 as Director of the Safety and Accident Investigation Centre before becoming Head of Air Transport and Professor of Safety Accident Investigation in 2006 and Director of Theme in 2015. In 2011, Graham led the University’s successful bid for a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education - the highest honour that can be awarded to a UK academic institution - based on the University’s work in aviation safety. This was followed in 2013 with the Flight Safety Foundation’s Richard Teller Crane Founder’s Award to mark the University’s sustained corporate leadership in aviation safety.  

In 2017, he led the University’s successful bid to build a new £67m Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre in conjunction with Research England and with industry partners including Thales, Saab, Aveillant, Raytheon and Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited. The Centre will form a key part of the Global Research Airport at Cranfield and incorporate a Boeing 737 ground demonstrator facility and connection to the University’s runway for the National Flying Laboratory Centre’s Flying Classroom.

Graham serves as an Independent Member of the TUI (Northern Region) Airlines Safety Review Board and as the Independent Safety Adviser to the British Airways Board.
