2018 - Excellence in Postgraduate Education: Innovation in Postgraduate Teaching Methods

The UK needs postgraduate education that is distinctive, of value and encourages inclusive participation. Good partnerships between postgraduate learners, facilitators and business and industry are recognised as essential to inclusivity, which contribute to quality, diversity and are crucial for developing postgraduate learner skills. This symposium brought together a range of experts from industry and academia across the fields of manufacturing, materials and design to discuss best practice in postgraduate education, explore and share challenges and opportunities faced by our learners, employers and educators.

2017 - Excellence in Postgraduate Education: Manufacturing, Materials and Design, Master's Level Apprenticeships, Future Challenges

Master's level Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to develop the next generation of manufacturing, materials and design leaders with a mix of academic and vocational qualifications and learning. This higher apprenticeship programme is gaining significant industry engagement as new standards are developed. The quality of the learning and skills development is even more important at the master's level (Level 7).

2015 - Excellence in Postgraduate Education: Manufacturing, Materials and Design

This symposium brought together a community of experts across the fields of manufacturing, materials and design postgraduate education to define essential attributes and propose routes to achieving excellence in postgraduate education. Participants shared ideas and experiences of existing excellence in postgraduate education.

Short presentations during the day considered existing perspectives from UK and US Universities, business and industry employers and the postgraduate student body with insight from a HEFCE funded postgraduate study project. Participants also explored pertinent aspects of this broad subject in more detail constructing a postgraduate education roadmap for linking the postgraduate education content, business needs and skills development in manufacturing, materials and design. The discussions, findings and outcomes from the event have been captured in the accompanying report presented to Government during the 2015 National Manufacturing Debate.

2014 - Excellence in Postgraduate Education: Manufacturing, Materials and Design

The Excellence in Postgraduate Education: Manufacturing, Materials and Design 2014 event was held on 8 May. Delivered with Higher Education Academy and Works Management (Media Partner).

Defining and achieving excellence in postgraduate education has received little attention as research surrounding best practice has typically targeted undergraduate education. Experts from across the fields of manufacturing, materials and design postgraduate education discussed what should the ‘best’ postgraduate education look like, and how can excellence in postgraduate teaching, learning and overall student experience be achieved. Findings from this event were published in a postgraduate education report that was presented to Government during the 2014 National Manufacturing Debate.
