The day starts with an outline of the activated sludge microbiology, followed by the main features of AS, understanding the key design and operational parameters, the main AS reactor configurations, including standard operation and efficiency, in real examples.

The course includes a number of calculations and practical examples around AS design and operation. The second part of the day is focused on BNR, starting with the understanding of the principles and requirements for nitrification, denitrification and biological phosphorus removal. Peter Vale, Senior Strategist - Wastewater R&D at Severn Trent, often acts as guest lecture, detailing his practical experience on BNR, an overview on Anammox and chemical struvite precipitation.
