This masterclass will provide an insight into the potential of the pile cloth media filter technology and its true place in wastewater treatment applications through a detailed understanding of the fundamentals, applications and performance.

As the water industry is facing stricter consents for treated effluents while also aiming to achieve more efficient operation of treatment systems, the implementation of sustainable technologies is becoming critical. In this context, pile cloth media filters have attracted attention in recent years due to their potential application at primary and tertiary treatment stages and simplicity of operation. However, a more detailed understanding of the mechanisms and performance of the technology will enable a true evaluation of its potential for the UK water sector.

Course structure

This unique live online masterclass will be delivered over 3.5 hours through a series of short presentations delivered by Professor Bruce Jefferson and Dr Marc Pidou from Cranfield University who have extensive research experience in filtration technologies with in particular over 8 years on the development and application of pile cloth media filters and by an external speaker from the industry on a specific case study followed by a Q&A session.

What you will learn

This masterclass will deliver a detailed understanding of cloth media filtration and provide key insights for future implementation of the technology.

After attending this masterclass, you will be able to:

  • Describe, contextualise and explain PCMF to technical and non-technical audiences,
  • Identify best practice and recognise current advantages and limitations of the PCMF technology,
  • Apply core knowledge for the support of design and implementation of PCMF.

Core content

  • State of play of pile cloth media filter applications in the UK water sector,
  • Fundamentals/mechanisms of pile cloth media filtration,
  • Process configurations and applications,
  • Treatment and operational performance,
  • Case study site.

Who should attend
