The aim of this module is to provide you with the theoretical and empirical knowledge and analytical tools to understand and critically engage with two fundamental concepts within the study and practice of security, development and conflict: Governance and the Rule of Law, with particular attention placed on their relationship to notions of Constitutionalism and Human Rights.

What you will learn
On successful completion of this module you should be able to:
- Examine the relationship between constitutionalism, rule of law and human rights
- Evaluate and analyse possible solutions to the challenges which arise when governing the security sector in a law-based, constitutionally-based political system
- Synthesise the relationship between responsibility, accountability, transparency and oversight when evaluating security governance in theory and practice;
- Compare and contrast experiences around the world focusing on the impact of actors, forms of government and informal societal structures;
- Gather, retrieve, synthesise and critically evaluate information from a number of primary and secondary sources
