The gas turbine engine is a very versatile power plant. Its cost, size and efficiency have made it a very useful prime mover in air, land and sea applications. Those favourable features are the result of the very advanced implementation of physical laws and detailed knowhow acquired through decades of experience by the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Staff associated with procurement, operation and maintenance can also greatly benefit from similar knowledge. It is natural to expect that this knowledge, when judiciously applied, can deliver improvements in operations and economics.

Partnerships

About ETN Global

ETN Global is a non-profit membership association bringing together the entire value chain of the gas turbine technology community. Through cooperative efforts and by initiating common activities and projects, ETN encourages and facilities information exchange cooperation to accelerate research, development, demonstration, and deployment of safe, secure and affordable carbon-neutral energy solutions by 2030. ETN currently has 110 members.

About ISABE

The International Society for Air Breathing Engines (ISABE) was formed to further free international exchanges of airbreathing propulsion. With 25 national representatives, ISABE holds events on six continents. For 50 years ISABE biannually delivers conferences in propulsion with invited lectures, contributed technical paper sessions, pre-arranged sessions, special forums and social events for informal discussions, networking and relaxation.

Speakers

Professor Pericles Pilidis
Head – Thermal Power and Propulsion

His Doctorate in Gas Turbine Performance was followed by employment in the gas turbine maintenance base of an airline where he contributed to performance evaluation, repair processes and inventory management, also the specialisation of his MBA. He joined Cranfield in 1986. He now leads a centre with 200 staff and postgraduates delivering research and education for gas turbines, worldwide, in air, land and sea applications. He has many honours and awards including former Board Membership in ETN and UK representative in ISABE.

Dr. Theoklis Nikolaidis
Director – Thermal Power MSc

While an engineering officer in the Hellenic Air Force he undertook the Cranfield Gas Turbine MSc and a Doctorate in evaluating gas turbines in Air Force operational matters to complement his maintenance policy and quality assurance duties applied to aircraft engine operations. After 21 years in the Air Force, primarily in advanced O&M, he joined Cranfield where he applies his experience to operational matters deploying advanced analysis techniques, including the operational application of gas turbine digital twins.

Dr. Suresh Sampath
Head Gas Turbine Systems and Operations

While a Senior Engineer in the Indian Navy he undertook a Cranfield Doctorate developing a digital twin for an advanced marine gas turbine engine for health monitoring purposes. After 25 years in the Indian Navy delivering gas turbine maintenance selection and maintenance duties he joined Cranfield where he currently leads international projects and education in gas turbines for air, land and sea applications. These are primarily focused on the needs of gas turbine users and his activities have led to many international awards.

Mr. Paul Lambart
Visiting Academic Fellow

Ex Managing Director of R-MC Power Recovery Ltd, a compressor washing based business. He has over thirty years of commercial experience in delivering innovative products with his background in Chemistry and Engineering. A Visiting Fellow of Cranfield for the past 16 years and Chairman of the Industrial Advisory Board to the Thermal Power MSc. At R-MC, he was the main liaison between the company and the University where he was directly involved with 19 PhD candidates and over 50 MSc student’s projects. Currently operating within a consultancy business helping GT users to obtain the best performance from their equipment with the minimum impact on the environment.

Dr. Iyad Al-attar
Visiting Academic Fellow

A Mechanical Engineer, air filtration consultant, and environmental enthusiast. A Visiting Academic Fellow at Cranfield University. He is the first associated consultant for EUROVENT Middle East for air quality and filtration affairs. He received his Engineering degrees from Toronto [Canada], Kuwait and Loughborough [UK] Universities. His area is the performance of high-efficiency pleated filters for HVAC and land-based gas turbine applications with special emphasis on the chemical and physical characterization of airborne particles.
