Much of our business results from clients using our research facilities. These include:

  • Big data visualisation suite: Tools to capture, analyse and visualise 'big data' resources arising from our 'Internet of Agri-Things' facilities, unique national and international environmental data resources, and satellite-derived land assessments, addressing challenges posed by the requirements of current and future resource security.

  • National Reference Centre for Soils and World Soils Archive: The largest soil materials collection in Europe. Recognised as the UK's definitive source of national soils information. Our World Soil Survey Archive 'WOSSAC' also holds many thousand unique soil and land records for 340+ territories worldwide.

  • Soil-crop systems and precision agriculture: Unique facilities (in partnership with Agri-EPI and CHaP Centres for Agricultural Innovation) for creating and trialling simulated soil-crop systems at pilot scale (eg 24 x 3 tonne soil) in a glasshouse fitted with a state-of-the-art overhead phenotyping platform; and a sensor development laboratory linked to five satellite farms for development and translation of novel technologies for precision agriculture.

  • Postharvest laboratory: We have one of the largest centres in Europe dedicated to research in postharvest biology and technology; for physiological, biochemical and molecular analysis.
