The Electric Power and Drives (E-PAD) Group provides a forum for fundamental and transformative research in various facets of electrical energy conversion. Our particular focuses are on the design and control of electric machines and power converters, and their applications in energy and transportation systems. Read more Read less
Founded in 2012, the Group works proactively with researchers in other disciplines, and benefits from the support of the close links to state-of-the-art research facilities. Our activities are typically highly cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary. We have been successful in delivering a wide range of national and international funded projects, ranging from high-performance traction motor for electric vehicles to high efficiency generators as portable power supply for humanitarian aid; from renewable energy integration to the smart-grid to power electronic converter for multiple energy storage; with a view to creating innovative solutions to meet the many energy and transportation challenges that we face today. Recently, we successfully led to completion two strategic multi-national projects on advancing UK capabilities in the integration of electric vehicles with the smart electric grid.
Our strategy is to leverage our expertise in electrification to create the critical mass in response to the rapidly changing research priorities in energy and transportation. In 2016, we set up a ‘Connected Electric Research Laboratory’ dedicated to electrical machines and smart grids with shared resources from UK and overseas partners. Our E-PAD laboratory has attracted the support of National Instruments, Texas Instruments, ABB, Siemens, Semikrom, and Yokagawa.
