The world needs talented people like you more than ever, and we're really excited to help you to keep moving forward in your life. We can't wait to welcome you to our University. Here's what to expect when starting your Cranfield journey.

Staying safe and secure

Safety first: We are committed to providing you with an outstanding, practical education and have been working hard, using current UK Government guidance on social distancing, to make that a reality, while keeping you safe and healthy. Designated entry and exit points, one-way systems, increased signage, safe access to toilets and hand sanitiser stations are all in place. We have introduced frequent deep cleaning schedules to all our facilities and on-campus accommodation.

A unique learning environment: Our rural location and large-scale facilities have always given our students the space to pursue your studies in a unique environment. At times like these, that’s especially important. We are committed to providing you with an outstanding, practical education and a great experience. We have been working hard to make that a reality.

Welcoming you to campus: We have been gradually and carefully opening up our Cranfield campus over the last few months and currently have research staff and students working in labs on our COVID-secure site. As we prepare to welcome you to our Cranfield community, you can be sure that we are ready to help you to change the world while keeping you safe and healthy.

What we all need to do

By following these simple steps, we can all ensure we stay safe and secure:

Re-opening our Cranfield and Shrivenham sites

Ensuring the health and safety of our Cranfield community is our priority.

We have developed new systems, protocols and cleaning regimes and are following strict social distancing and health guidelines.

Using that new approach, we have been gradually and carefully opening up our Cranfield campus and Shrivenham sites over five phases.

Phase 1: June

In early June, we started re-opening our University.

Our Estates, Campus Services and Health and Safety teams piloted our social distancing and health and safety measures at some of our technical facilities.

Our Chief Operating Officer, Philip Aspinall, established the Sites Activities Group to ensure that all our activity across our sites was carefully co-ordinated and controlled.

Phase 2: June - July

Research staff and students started undertaking some activities in more of our technical facilities.

Members of our Campus Services team have been on site throughout the lockdown, as we have been providing services to our international students in on-campus accommodation who have been unable to travel back to their home country.

As Government advice has allowed it, we have been providing more activities for our current students, such as an outdoor gym.

Phase 3: August

In August, we'll be making our final preparations to welcome you to Cranfield in September.

More of our staff will be on site, rather than working from home, to make sure you can look forward to the best possible experience.

Phase 4: September - December

You will have received updates through the pre-registration area of our virtual learning environment, Canvas, and from your course team.

The pre-registration area on Canvas will also help you to familiarise yourself with the University and will include details of any IT requirements, pre-reading or online tutorials to help start your Cranfield journey, such as preparing to study and a variety of study skills.

We know too the value that you place on meeting fellow students and becoming part of our community. We'll be running a number of welcome events, starting on Monday 28 September and running throughout October, to help you settle in, meet your fellow students and course team. Ensuring your health and safety is our priority. Some of our orientation and team-building events will be online and others will be in face-to-face groups enabling everyone to observe social distancing.

If you are an international student arriving from one of the countries that the UK Government has said is exempt from the 14-day quarantine period, you will be able to enter England without needing to self-isolate (unless you have been in or travelled through non-exempt countries in the preceding 14 days). Further information on the exempt countries has been published on the UK Government website. If you do need to quarantine when you arrive at your on-campus accommodation, we will provide food for the period that you self-quarantine and will make arrangements to enable your IT.

We are retaining the distinctive features of a Cranfield degree, including strong involvement from our industrial partners.

Phase 5: January 2021

We are confident that the difference a Cranfield degree will make to your future career and prospects is stronger than ever.

As you enter your second term, we will continue to be flexible to provide you with the best possible experience.

In the summer, we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary.

Ensuring you have a unique Cranfield experience

We are committed to providing you with an outstanding, practical education and have been working hard to make that a reality.

Please be assured that at least 70% of the hours that would normally be delivered face-to-face over the duration of your full-time MSc course at Cranfield campus will remain face-to-face.

We are retaining all the elements that our students and industry partners tell us make a Cranfield degree special: hands-on and applied learning in small tutorials, group projects and developing your study skills working with your peers. Our staff-to-student ratio is one of the best for any university in the UK (one member of academic staff to every five students) and that won't change.

Lectures that would normally involve larger groups of students will be delivered online. Research laboratories will be accessible for students’ use and managed to accommodate social distancing with hygiene measures. Our rural location offers open spaces which are great for taking a break or for use as alternative study areas.

Our links with industry are as close as ever and we are trusted to understand and be responsive to many organisations' needs. For many of you, those close links with business help you to pursue your dream career.
