Course structure
This unique masterclass will be delivered live online over 3 hours by Professor Peter Jarvis and Dr Pablo Campo Moreno. Peter Jarvis is Professor of Water Science and Technology. His research focusses on using new and existing technologies for advanced removal of natural organic matter and a range of other contaminants from water sources used for drinking. He is a lead author of the latest WHO report on microplastic in drinking water. Dr Pablo Campo Moreno is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Chemistry with a research focus on the fate and transport of pollutants during water and wastewater treatments as well as bioremediation processes. What you will learn
This course will provide state-of-the-art knowledge on microplastics in water. You will learn about the occurrence, fate, and transport of microplastics in water treatment processes. We cover sampling strategies and instrumental methods for both quantitative and qualitative monitoring of microplastics. We explain the current quality assurance/control measures needed to ensure sound data acquisition and validation of results.
Core content
- Definition and classification of microplastics,
- Sampling techniques and analytical methods,
- Quality assurance/control for analysis of microplastics,
- A brief resume of health impacts of microplastics exposure,
- Occurrence of microplastics in water environments,
- Removal of microplastics by water treatment processes (coagulation, filtration, membranes etc),
- Nanoplastics – are these particles the real problem?
Who should attend
This masterclass is aimed at all researchers, scientists, engineers and managers who have an interest in water quality and the latest issues the sector is facing. No specific experience is required other than a general understanding of water treatment and supply.Read our Professional development (CPD) booking conditions.
