Do micro and nano plastics pose a risk for drinking water supplies? Learn  about the latest thinking and developments on plastic research in potable water production and distribution systems.

This masterclass will consider and discuss the latest information on micro and nano plastics in drinking water. This will cover the extent of the problem, where the plastics come from and how they get into drinking water sources and the removal efficiency of treatment processes for removal of different sized plastic particle. We will explain how plastic particle shape, size and polymer type determine the removal of micro and nano plastics during water treatment. We will also describe the current methodologies used for the analysis of plastics in water and consider the latest information on the health impacts of microplastics on the human body.

Course structure

This unique masterclass will be delivered live online over 3 hours by Professor Peter Jarvis and Dr Pablo Campo Moreno. Peter Jarvis is Professor of Water Science and Technology. His research focusses on using new and existing technologies for advanced removal of natural organic matter and a range of other contaminants from water sources used for drinking. He is a lead author of the latest WHO report on microplastic in drinking water. Dr Pablo Campo Moreno is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Chemistry with a research focus on the fate and transport of pollutants during water and wastewater treatments as well as bioremediation processes.

What you will learn

This course will provide state-of-the-art knowledge on microplastics in water. You will learn about the occurrence, fate, and transport of microplastics in water treatment processes. We cover sampling strategies and instrumental methods for both quantitative and qualitative monitoring of microplastics. We explain the current quality assurance/control measures needed to ensure sound data acquisition and validation of results.

Core content

  • Definition and classification of microplastics,
  • Sampling techniques and analytical methods,
  • Quality assurance/control for analysis of microplastics,
  • A brief resume of health impacts of microplastics exposure,
  • Occurrence of microplastics in water environments,
  • Removal of microplastics by water treatment processes (coagulation, filtration, membranes etc),
  • Nanoplastics – are these particles the real problem?

Who should attend

This masterclass is aimed at all researchers, scientists, engineers and managers who have an interest in water quality and the latest issues the sector is facing. No specific experience is required other than a general understanding of water treatment and supply.
