This module can be taken as a Short Course for Credit or a Standalone Short Course.

Please go to the 'Upgrade to a professional qualification' section for more information.

This module covers the essential concepts of probability and statistics, including the design and analysis of trials. A range of popular statistical techniques are dealt with, ranging from classical tests based on the normal distribution to non-parametric methods. Emphasis is on the practical use of statistics to improve data analysis and enhance decision making.

Course structure

One course per year; 5 days duration per course. Lectures, including tutorial elements, and practicals using statistical software.

What you will learn

On successful completion you should be able to:

  • Critically assess and calculate probabilities for the binomial, Poisson and normal distributions,

  • Critically assess and execute significance tests and  confidence intervals  for means and variances in one-sample, two-sample, large sample and small sample cases,
  • Critically assess and execute simple linear regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance.

Core content

Module topics:

  • Summarising data and exploratory data analysis (by pre-reading),
  • Probability and probability distributions,
  • Confidence intervals,
  • Significance tests for large and small samples,
  • Tests of consistency and goodness of fit,
  • Non-parametric methods,
  • Introduction to experimental and trials design,
  • Regression,
  • Analysis of variance for the analysis of experimental data,
  • Statistical aspects of simulation modelling.

Upgrade to a professional qualification

When taken as a Short Course for Credit, 10 credit points can be put towards either the Defence and Security (Technology) MSc or Military Operational Research MSc.

Find out more about short course credit points.

Who should attend

Those involved with designing  and analysing the results of trials, experiments or surveys in any area where these results are not wholly predictable, such as military trials, industrial experiments or social surveys. The course  assumes no prior knowledge of statistics and the mathematical level is at a mixture of A-level and GCSE level.

Concessions

There are limited places on these modules. You may not receive an offer until places have been confirmed, usually 1 to 2 weeks before the start date.
