Background

Dr Cole arrives at Cranfield from Birmingham City University (BCU) where he had a professorial post as Director of Innovation and Enterprise within the Faculty of Computing Engineering and the Built Environment.

Adrian has spent more than 30 years working in or for the automotive industry, initially via industry funded doctoral studies at Bath University (diesel engine thermal insulation) and then post doc at Imperial College(turbocharger turbine studies). After a period working as Technical Director for an engine consultancy (ERA) that provided engine test & development services to most of the UK’s engine manufacturers Adrian was appointed Powertrain Manager at the Motor Industry Research Centre (MIRA) where he was responsible for a business centre that included the development of its exhaust emission measurement capability and establishing new strategic partnerships and facility expansion projects. On joining BCU Adrian took the lead in developing its automotive course offerings (MSc Automotive Calibration & Control, BSc Automotive Computer Aided Design), establishing international franchise arrangements (Germany & China) and submitting funding bids; DTI Foresight Vehicle, DTI Technology Programme, ERDF, ESF Objective 2, Wellcome JIF (£2.05m with University of Birmingham and Coventry), Carbon Trust , KTP. More recently Adrian has also worked with engineering teams within the automotive sector (JLR, Delphi, Dura, ZF) to improve their internal innovation methodologies and customer awareness.

  • Developing industrial research funding opportunities (partner meetings, bid development, internal approval)
  • Focus on Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing Sectors
  • Ocassional support for academic delivery (automotive powertrain, innovation processes)
