The Safety and Accident Investigation Centre at Cranfield University is the home of innovative research focused on solving safety problems highlighted by accidents and incidents, particularly in both civilian and military aviation sectors. This research has been given a further stimulus by a recent £67.5m investment in the ‘Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre’ (DARTeC). Our research contributes to our world-leading training for transport accident investigators and safety managers and so we are keen to expand our research in other transport sectors and also in health.

We are seeking candidates with strong academic qualifications to undertake doctoral research in support of the Centre’s research agenda in the following areas:

  • Ergonomics / Human Factors: Designing tasks and measuring performance to improve safety;
  • Development and application of analytical methods to improve organizational and transport safety;
  • Methods and tools to enhance the investigation of incidents and accidents;
  • Safety Leadership: manifestation, characterisation and impact on organizations.

For informal enquiries about these or other areas of interest please contact Dr Colin Pilbeam in the first instance.

For exceptional candidates bursaries may be available.
