Professor Simon Jones DSc FIET CEng SMIEEE was appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of Cranfield Defence and Security, the University’s embedded capability at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom at Shrivenham in January 2016.
Prior to this, he was Provost of Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan, a five billion dollar project to create a research university for Central Asia in co-operation with six of the top 30 universities in the world including Cambridge, Carnegie-Mellon and the National University of Singapore.
He has a range of experience in building and developing new universities based on international partnerships in countries including the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland. For the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he was the Chief Executive Officer of the MIT Media Lab (Europe)
Within the UK, he was been Dean of Engineering and Design at the University of Bath and ARM/Royal Academy of Engineering Research Professor at Loughborough University.
Active in professional societies, he was Chairman of the IEEE for UK and Republic of Ireland and managed professional networks and editorial roles for the IET.
He has been an investor and founder of three high technology start-ups and advised many governments and regions on the strategy, policies and implementation of innovation clusters and the exploitation of research from universities.
