Cranfield Defence and Security has provided Royal Navy staff with a short course training package at the service’s base in Scotland. The three-day Security and Risk Management course was delivered in September to around 20 delegates at HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane, home to the UK’s submarine based nuclear deterrent.

The aim of the course, which draws heavily on the UK’s experience in a global environment, is to develop a broad understanding of contemporary security and risk management by analysing theories, practices and state-of-the-art processes.

A spokesperson for HMNB Clyde said: “The bespoke course has provided staff with the opportunity to step back and look at the global picture in applying risk management and crisis management concepts.

“Staff have greatly appreciated the opportunity to engage on a variety of risk management topics with a number of different lecturers who work in different sectors and discuss their experiences and lessons relating to risk.”

Topics covered in the course included risk communications and dealing with the media, crisis management and fraud risk management. Interactive discussions focusing on case studies also allowed delegates to frame their learning on a practical level, thinking about risk management tools and tactics in greater detail, and teaching them to challenge the risk management paradigm.

Edith Wilkinson, course lead and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for International Security and Resilience said: “The bespoke content of this executive short course sought to expose participants to both theory and experience as it was delivered by academics in the field and senior security risk management practitioners.”

Delegates described the course as “a greatly appreciated opportunity to think outside the box” and said that the thought-provoking sessions allowed them “to think about and challenge risk management”.

The Security and Risk Management course has been taught at Cranfield Defence and Security for over ten years and is usually run over five days but content was adapted to create the customised three-day version for HMNB Clyde.
