Describe your apprenticeship experience…

My apprenticeship experience has been great! At work I’ve been surrounded by friendly and skilled people who I have learnt from. This, coupled with the knowledge gained at college, has set me up to have a great career as a technician at Cranfield University.

How did you complete your 20% off-the-job training?

There are lots of different ways to complete your 20% off-the-job training. The majority of mine was completed by going to college one day a week to study. I also did a mixture of online and face-to-face training outside of college and shadowed senior colleagues to get a better understanding of how things are done.

How has the apprenticeship benefitted you personally/professionally?

I have become more confident as a result of doing this apprenticeship. I have been able to interact with a wide range of people from different backgrounds which has enhanced my communication skills and understanding of working with others. Working with highly-skilled and knowledgeable people has helped me grow and improve my own skills. Having now completed my apprenticeship, I have gained qualifications which will help my professional development in the future.

Did the apprenticeship impact on your personal time and if so, how did you manage this?

The apprenticeship did impact my personal time a little. This was mainly for the completion of college assignments which were timebound. However, I found if I kept on top of them and didn’t let them pile up then it was easy to manage.

What would you say to anyone else considering embarking on an apprenticeship?

If you want to gain hands-on experience and expand your knowledge of your chosen discipline, whilst getting paid, then an apprenticeship is a brilliant way to do this!
