Pre-Master's Course in Engineering
Suitable for those with a first degree in engineering, physics or mathematics but who do not meet the standard entry requirements for a Cranfield MSc. This course is ideal if you have been out of formal education for some time or wish to change your career direction. Consideration will also be given to applicants holding a UK Ordinary/Pass degree (or equivalent for overseas students) in cases where this was the highest achievable award.
Takes you on to your chosen engineering MSc course – and excellent career prospects. After successfully completing this course, students can choose one of the following postgraduate courses offered by our School of Engineering or School of Applied Sciences:
- Aerospace Vehicle Design (with options in Aircraft Design, Avionic Systems Design and Structural Design)
- Aerospace Dynamics (with options in Aerodynamics and Flight Dynamics)
- Computational Fluid Mechanics
- Astronautics and Space Engineering
- Thermal Power (with options in Aerospace Propulsion; Gas Turbine Technology; Power, Propulsion and the Environment; Rotating Machinery, Engineering and Management)
- Design of Rotating Machines
- Automotive Product Engineering
- Motorsport Engineering and Management
- Offshore and Ocean Technology
- Process Systems Engineering (with options in Energy Systems and Thermal Processes; Process Systems Technology)
- Ultra Precision Technologies

You will be taught by staff with many years of academic and industrial experience from the School of Engineering and the School of Applied Sciences.
Course description
The Pre-Master’s Course in Engineering is an intensive, full-time course designed to be a bridging programme. The main benefits of this course are:
- Successful completion of the Pre-Master's course will lead to direct admission to the engineering MSc course of your choice
- Developing the personal and professional skills needed for postgraduate study and future career development
- Enhanced understanding of engineering sciences and mathematics
- Experience of the methodologies, philosophies and tools that are used in industry
- Improved academic English language skills and research methods
The lecture courses, practical laboratory sessions and design exercises are timetabled between October and July. Students will need to dedicate a significant proportion of their time to studying outside of the teaching period. A typical total time commitment is approximately 1,500 hours over the ten-month course.
Modules:
The lecture course covers many aspects of aerospace and general engineering applications including:
- Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering: Mechanical Design, Basic Aerodynamics, Aeronautical Engineering, Propulsion and Power, Engineering Stress Analysis and Introduction to Engineering Materials and Failure Analysis
- Analysis and Science: Mathematics and Thermo Fluids
- Supporting Skills: Computing (FORTRAN 90, and Visual Basic), academic English language and research methods, Computer Aided Design
- Exercise and Project Work: exercises or a research project related to an MSc option
Throughout the course, students have access to specialist equipment including:
- Space Engineering Laboratory
- Flight Simulator
- Wind Tunnels (low and high-speed, supersonic, hyper-sonic, and an 8 ft x 6 ft tunnel with rolling road)
- Computer Teaching Laboratory (MATLAB, CATIA, etc)
- General Machining Workshop Facilities
- Rapid Prototype Laboratory
Entry requirements
Ordinary degree or HND and 3 years experience (or equivalent) in engineering and physical science disciplines. Candidates will be individually considered. Previous experience, aptitude and level of academic achievement will be assessed.
