Energy Systems and Thermal Processes (Option of Process Systems Engineering MSc)
Suitable for engineering and applied science graduates interested in energy and its efficient utilisation in industrial and commercial applications.
Takes you on to work as an environmentally-aware energy specialist with an in-depth understanding of energy and its rational use in industry. Suitable students are encouraged to embark on further research programmes leading to MPhil and PhD degrees.
You will be taught by members of Cranfield University staff and other academic and industrial experts.
Course description
The Energy Systems and Thermal Processes option of the Process Systems Engineering MSc provides students with knowledge and practical experience of technologies and techniques for designing energy-efficient systems, managing energy and controlling environmental degradation in a cost-effective way.
Since 1972, the MSc has produced more than 1,000 international graduates who now work as engineers, consultants, advisors and researchers in industry, consultancies, design practices, government departments, local authorities, research organisations and academic institutions worldwide.
The course consists of nine taught modules and a significant research project.
Individual research project
Students can choose from a variety of research projects. These are often undertaken in collaboration with industrial partners, although students are also encouraged to submit topics of their own. These include experimental investigations, practical monitoring, computer simulations, and design and feasibility assessments.
Recent research areas have included:
- modelling of energy-conversion systems and thermal processes
- combined heat and power schemes
- renewable energy utilisation
- control of environmental pollution
- energy and environmental policies
- combustion processes
- practical heat-transfer problems
- process control.

Entry requirements
1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree or equivalent in engineering or applied science. Other qualifications with considerable industrial experience will be considered.

1 year full-time, up to 3 years part-time.
Start date
Full-time: October. Part-time: throughout the year.

Assessment
Examinations/assignments 50%, thesis 50%.
