Course description
Benefits
This course offers an efficient way of up-skilling technical staff in the rapidly growing area of automotive transmission engineering. On completion of the full course programme delegates should have a comprehensive understanding of the technology and be able to make a significant contribution to design and development teams working in the automotive sector.
Course Structure and Duration
This course is a stand-alone course of 5 days' duration but it is supplemented by the broader range of courses offered by the Department. In particular the programme of courses offered in the area of Hybrid Electric Vehicles is seen as an important but separate area of powertrain technology. The course consists of a mix of lectures and demonstrations of component and system operation with copies of presentation material.
Main Themes
The course will cover:
- Transmission categories: manual and automatics, production and trends
- Typical construction and operation of transmissions: manual and automated manuals, automatic transmissions, dual clutch transmissions, continuously variable transmissions and split path operation
- Torque converters: operation and matching
- Synchronisers
- Gearing basics: geometry, conjugate motion, noise, rattle, error, backlash and module
- Gear loading and life: reaction loads, parallel and bevel, failure modes, bending, contact fatigue, wear, scoring and micropitting
- Clutch operation: thermal and torque calculations for wet and dry
- Shafts: torsion, bending and deflection
- Splines: capacity, classification, fit and backlash
- Final drive units: open, passive and active
- Tribology: Hertzian contact and stress, lubrication regimes, friction and Stribeck
- Transmission control: automatic and CVT control
